Webinar – Floodplain Remapping in Tangipahoa Parish: Exploring Benefits and Costs Through Case Studies
FEMA’s map change processes offer the opportunity to ensure that regulatory flood mapping reflects best available data, but many communities don’t utilize tools like LOMRs and CLOMRs because they can be perceived as challenging and costly. While this can sometimes be the case, remapping often has multitudinous benefits including: shifting flood insurance premiums for residents to reflect more accurate flood risk, helping to articulate the value of future mitigation interventions, capturing the benefits of drainage improvements, and building confidence in flood mapping overall.
In this webinar, Nic Leblanc of Tangipahoa Parish will use real-world case studies to discuss how local communities can leverage local knowledge, data, and resources to advocate for FIRM changes affordably and in ways that serve whole communities. He’ll draw from his 15+ year experience as a floodplain manager to discuss potential costs and benefits inherent in remapping processes, how he has communicated map changes to residents in the past, and how to gain buy-in for remapping projects.
This webinar offers 1 Continuing Education Credit (CEC) through the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM). The webinar will be held from 12-1 pm on Mar 2, 2022.
