Content: Dave Guignet, Maryland State NFIP Coordinator provided an overview on how to use the data found on mdfloodmaps.com for floodplain determinations as well as other features in the web tool. As NFIP State Coordinator, Dave regulates floodplain activities statewide, acts as liaison between FEMA and communities, and is the project manager for the State as a Cooperating Technical Partner (CTP) for Statewide digital floodplain re-mapping and public outreach. He provides tools for community, engineers, and planners to research, download, and maintain flood studies at mdfloodmaps.com.
- June 8, 2017 – MASFM Lunch and Learn – Citizens’ Climate Lobby: When Science is not the Answer:

Content: Citizens’ Climate Lobby speakers Sabrina Fu and Eric Borchers spoke about their group and offered insights into how we can generate the political will to pass sound federal climate legislation. The basis of human-induced climate change is fundamental science that has been known for over 100 years. Over the past three decades more accurate models have unearthed clear evidence of what is occurring to our climate, and yet a practical solution still seems a generation away.

- July 26, 2017 – MASFM Lunch and Learn – Floodplain Design, Construction, and Impacts on Flood Insurance
Flood events are increasing in number and intensity. During a flood event, homes must be built into compliance with local, state, and federal codes and regulations. We will describes floodplains and the potential hazards to buildings. Unless there are flood openings that allow floodwaters to flow into and out of enclosures below the Base Flood Elevation, hydrostatic pressure builds up on the foundation walls and can cause major damage. We will defines the difference in engineered and non-engineered flood openings and their ability to ensure resilient structures. We will explains the differences between wet floodproofing and dry floodproofing techniques, and when they are applicable. We will cover the regulations, codes, and standards as they relate to sustaining foundations in flood hazard areas. This course analyzes the role of building compliance in lowering flood insurance rates and what mitigation solutions are available to existing structures.

A Certified Floodplain Manager and Smart Vent ICC/AIA-CES HSW educator. Provides accredited continuing education programs for all parties involved in floodplain design, build, and habitation. Analyzes role of FEMA/NFIP regulation in IRC/IBC building codes for Architects, Building and Code Officials, Contractors, Engineers, Floodplain Managers, Homeowners, Insurance Agents, Property Managers, Realtors, and Surveyors. Better understanding of existing code impacts the health safety and welfare of the homeowner and how compliance can mitigate flood risk, lower flood insurance cost and make the home more resilient to flood events.
