Conference Event – Thursday October 20
A full day conference was held on Thursday, October 20, 2011, from 8:30am to 5pm at the Conference Center at Maritime Institute, Linthicum, Maryland. Over 20 Speakers, Exhibits, a Community Rating System workshop and information on Floodplain and Stormwater Management activities in Maryland spoke during the event. The day concluded with a networking event in the Maritime Museum.
Cost: $100 with membership valid through October 2012.

CFM Refresher Training – October 19, 2011
The NFIP: An Overview An all-day Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) refresher course, The NFIP: An Overview was held on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, at Michael Baker Jr., Inc., 1304 Concourse Drive, Suite 200, Linthicum, MD 21090-1014. This course was a good refresher even for current CFMs, who can claim six pre-approved Continuing Education Credits from the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) for attendance (once every three years). Cost: $20 includes lunch.
Field tour to Hart Miller Island – October 21, 2011
Hart Miller Island Field Tour –MAFSM was proud to offer a half-day field tour to Hart Miller Island on Friday, October 21, 2011, from 9:30 to 12:30. Attendees met at the land base located in Essex, MD. Attendees took a boat to the island. The tour will included a bus trip around the entire island, a short video and lunch, and a stop at the HMI DNR state park.
In order to remain competitive as a thriving maritime center, the Maryland Port Administration realized that Baltimore Harbor and its ancillary navigation channels would require maintenance and deepening to accommodate the larger oceangoing vessels. An extensive search to find suitable locations for placement of dredged material was conducted and the Hart Miller Island location was chosen. The State of Maryland and the Federal government stipulated that the entire HMI complex must be converted into a recreational and natural resource area once dredged material placement ceased. It was determined that the South Cell would be restored to wildlife habitat and passive recreation opportunities for the public. More information on the site can be found here.
CFM Exam – Friday October 21st
MAFSM hosted a Certified Floodplain Manager Exam at Michael Baker Jr., Inc.’s Linthicum, MD, office at 1304 Concourse Drive, Suite 200 on Friday October 21, 2011, from 9am – noon.
